Successful start-up of a wastewater treatment plant requires a specific set of events involving microbial community. First microbes must have a sufficient concentration to remove organic matter within the designed hydraulic retention time. Secondly, the microbial community needs to gather and settle. If one of these events does not accour, the satar-up period can take weeks, causing delays and possible production standstills for industrial wastewater treatment plants.
